Summary
Buan Rice is one of Korea’s signature rice varieties cultivated in the pristine natural environment of Buan County, Jeollabuk-do. Abundant sunlight, constant sea breeze rich in minerals, and pristine mineral-rich soil in the region produces one of the best-tasting rice varieties in the country.
Origins and Development
The rolling plains in the east of Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do are protected eco-friendly zones for growing rice plants. Processed with RFID tracking, Buan Rice is an eco-friendly brand of rice, GAP-labeled (“Good Agricultural Practice”- certified by Buan County for its excellent quality. In August, 2008 Buan County registered Buan Rice with the certified quality brand “Cheonnyeonui Ssomssi (referring to “millennium skill”) and made it the typical brand for rice grown in Buan County. From 2013 to 2018, Buan Rice has won the Grand Prize in National Brand Awards in the rice category for six consecutive years.
Production Method and Characteristics
Buan Rice is produced in the new mineral-rich reclaimed land with abundant sunlight and minimal damage from blight and insects. Plump rice grains make the quality outstanding and texture deliciously glutinous when cooked. Well-known brands include “Cheonnyeonui Ssomssi,” “Pungjaksori (referring to “sound of good harvest),” “Haepung Jayeon Haetssal (referring to “sea breeze natural fresh rice).” The rice sold under the brand “Cheonnyeonui Ssomssi” is jointly cultivated and managed by Buan County and the Buan Rice Processing Center (RPC). The rice is known for its excellent quality from special cultivation technologies, grains harvested from the contracted site, and strict quality controls during purchase and storage through an excellent agricultural management facility. Having won the national prize for five consecutive years, the brand has been acclaimed as one of the country’s best rice brands. The brand “Pungjaksori” offers top-quality rice grains grown in the fertile reclaimed land on the western coast known for its optimal climate for rice cultivation. Sourced and processed using excellent modern equipment, the brand was certified for top quality representing the Buan Agricultural Cooperative Federation. “Haepung Jayeon Haetssal” is eco-friendly and organic rice whose quality is certified by the institution specializing in eco-friendly agricultural produce certifications. The brand fastidiously selects only outstanding varieties cultivated by contracted growers. The rice is supplied as meals for schools in Buan County.
Current Status including Relevant Industry
Buan Rice was the first No. 1 rice brand to be registered in Korea carrying the geographical indication and protected as a trademark since self-governing provincial groups started to directly manage local specialty produce. Trademarks carrying geographical indications can be legally protected by a group or certification system. Such emblems are operated through a system of good faith practice, through which producers of the corresponding product can establish a corporation and allow only the members following the specified rules use the brand name exclusive to regional specialty products.
